3 Qualities of a Life Coach

Life coaches come from many different professional and educational backgrounds. Many have known that they desire a career in coaching, while others may be exploring coaching as a second career. No matter where you fall on the scale, great life coaches all draw from their personal experiences, the knowledge, and skills they obtain from a Life Coach Certification Program, and their individual talents, traits, and gifts.

If you are considering a career as a life coach, you may be wondering what qualities the most successful life coaches all share. Besides training and certification, certain personality traits are common amongst successful life coaches. Many of these are innate qualities, meaning they are never taught to the coach but rather are an integral part of the coach’s personality.

If you are unsure if you innately possess these traits, there is good news!

Many of these life coach qualities can be learned through practice, just like any other skill. And although these qualities are commonly found in great life coaches, the qualities discussed below are not meant to be an exhaustive list. There are countless other traits and qualities that great life coaches may possess to help their clients excel and to grow a successful life coaching practice for themselves.

A good coach will have a genuine curiosity about people and the world in general. When you approach anything from the standpoint of curiosity, you open up limitless possibilities and opportunities to learn and grow, both for you and your coaching clients. Curiosity allows you to ask better and more impactful questions, while at the same time being open to new and often unplanned avenues for discovery.

Being curious also allows you to be a better listener to your clients. When you can successfully quiet your “teaching-mind” and use your “listening-mind” with clients, you will find that you can ask more useful questions.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines empathy as “the action of understanding, … and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of another without having the feelings, thoughts, and experiences fully communicated.”

A successful life coach will be able to create a connection with their clients through empathy. This connection will then allow the clients to eliminate or reduce any embarrassment or shame they may feel about situations in their lives. This interpersonal connection and rapport is key to a trusting coach-client relationship.

There is a great deal of personal and professional satisfaction available to life coaches because they have unlimited opportunities to help other people achieve their dreams.
